Ken Avent
Board Chair
Ken joined the board of Summit Choral Collective in 2024 as Chair of the Board of Directors which brought together his love for music, his passion for what a choral group can bring to the world, and his experience in navigating the non-profit world. In his own words - “Working with SCC is the most fun I can imagine. This organization brings it all together - music, community, artistry, and all of the legal and logistical things that non-profits need to implement. The team is amazing and has created a meaningful community which continues to grow both in quantity and quality. I’m honored to be involved.”
Ken has had music as a part of his life since the 3rd grade when he started taking trombone lessons. Thanks to a fabulous school music system in Atlanta and then Charlotte, his musical experiences were nurtured and enabled him to attend the Brevard Music Center for several years and then graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music while also playing in the orchestra of the Dartmouth College Congregation of the Arts.
In 1968 Ken served 2 years in the Army including a year in Vietnam and then returned to Dartmouth in a management position at the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Shortly after that he took a job at a magazine and book wholesaler where he gradually worked his way up to General Manager.
In 1981, he founded his own software company creating software for retail bookstore chains across the country. After selling that company in 2001, Ken began several adventures, first as CEO of Youth Choirs, Inc. and music director of a church youth choir. Then in 2004 he was a founding director of the Jefferson Rural Clinic, Inc. which focused on providing healthcare for those in Jefferson and Grainger counties that had no access to care. He was also a founder of Bulgarian Child, Inc. which worked with orphanages in Bulgaria to better conditions for those children.
He has also served as a board member of the East Tennessee Foundation and has taken several courses in non-profit management through the Knoxville Alliance for Better Non-Profits.
